For Mary Audu, nine years of living with fibroids and waiting for treatment have finally come to an end.

A five-day free medical outreach in Malagum, Kagoro, Kaduna State, has given her new hope after she underwent surgery to remove the fibroids.

For almost a decade, Mary Audu had been waiting for treatment for fibroids.

But financial and other challenges repeatedly stood between her and the care she needed.

Her opportunity finally came when she saw information about the free medical outreach organised by the Jennifer Etuh Foundation, in partnership with Pro-Health International and the Kaduna State Ministry of Health.

Mary travelled from Kogi State to Kagoro to seek treatment, and this time, she received the surgery she had been waiting for.

Mary’s experience is shared by many others who came to the outreach seeking medical care.

Daniel Danladi, a person living with disability, was also among those who received treatment. He praised the organisers for providing the services free of charge and giving special attention to people with disabilities.

Within four days, more than 100 surgeries had been carried out, including treatment for fibroids, hernias and lumps.

Medical personnel say some patients arrived with health problems that had become worse because they could not afford treatment or had relied on unqualified practitioners.

The outreach also included vaccination and education on vaccines, aimed at helping women and children access protection against preventable diseases.

For Mary Audu, however, the intervention means something deeply personal.

After nine years of waiting, she can finally look forward to life beyond the pain and uncertainty caused by fibroids.
