The staff of the Nigeria Postal Service and other unions have blocked the entrance to the National Assembly complex in protest against the decision of the Ministry of Finance to move stamp duty collection from NIPOST to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS.
One of the leaders of the protest, Ayo Olorunfemi says it is to persuade the Senate not to pass the bill seeking to give legal might to the decision which has already received the approval of the House of Representatives.
Olorunfemi says over 9,000 direct jobs and 5 million indirect jobs may be lost if the ongoing process is allowed to stand.
He said the NIPOST workers are in the same union with the Nigeria Ports Authority, and if the movement of the stamp duty collection to FIRS succeeds, the ports may be the next victim.
