The Nigeria Immigration Service has called for coordinated action to tackle misinformation and help prospective migrants make safe and lawful travel decisions.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, said curbing irregular migration requires stakeholders to move beyond dialogue to practical measures, including public awareness.
She spoke through a representative at a seminar in Abuja themed “Bridging the Information Gap: Promoting Informed, Safe and Regular Migration.”
People migrate in search of education, jobs, safety and better living conditions.
But for some, the journey exposes them to human trafficking, migrant smuggling and travel fraud. Others lose their lives along the way.
The Nigeria Immigration Service organised the seminar to address information gaps that can leave prospective migrants vulnerable to exploitation.
The aim is to provide accurate, timely and reliable information on migration procedures and lawful pathways.
Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Franca Usiwoma Nwanneka, said the seminar would also help stakeholders develop practical responses to emerging irregular migration challenges.
A Senior Programme Associate at the International Organization for Migration, Nnenna Onuoha, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to working with the Nigeria Immigration Service to promote safe and regular migration.
The Nigeria Immigration Service also pledged to strengthen its operations through institutional reforms, modern border technology, intelligence gathering and improved service delivery.
