It has been suggested that the establishment of a specialised Nigeria Mines Rangers Service would help tackle the rising cases of illegal mining and protect the country’s mineral resources.
The commandant of the National Unity and Peace Corps Chinedu Nneji (NUPEC) NUPEC, made the call in Abuja as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace.
Nneji called for greater investment in security, justice and responsible management of natural resources.
With this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” Nneji identified illegal mining and competition over natural resources among factors contributing to insecurity in some communities.
He called for the establishment of a specialised Nigeria Mines Rangers Service to tackle illegal mining and protect the country’s mineral resources.
Nneji also commiserated with the Federal Government over the reported deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Niger State.
He called for dialogue, justice and responsible resource management to promote lasting peace.
Nneji urged Nigerians to make peace a daily commitment and urged communities to reject division and build peace through everyday actions.
