Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT in Lagos State have joined their counterparts across the country in solidarity protest to call for the immediate release of students and teachers kidnapped in Oriire in Ogbomosho, Oyo State.
The Union also called on the Federal Government to immortalise the slain teacher, Michael Oyedokun and a compensation for the family with the full sponsorship of the education of the kidnapped school children after their release.
Calling for the immediate release of the kidnapped school children and teachers in Oyo State, NUT Chairman in Lagos State, Hassan Akintoye who said every strata of the society in the country is affected by the spate of insecurity urged the government to take decisive action and proactive steps to address the situation as well as ensure that those in captivity were rescued without further delay.
This is as teachers in Benue State, North-Central Nigeria also joined the nationwide protest against insecurity and the recent kidnapping of students and teachers in Oyo State.
They marched through Makurdi, the state capital demanding immediate action from government.
Last month’s kidnapping of students and teachers in Oyo and Borno State as well as the deteriorating level of insecurity in the country have forced teachers to carry placards portraying their grievances and chanting solidarity songs.
Their central demand is the immediate release of teachers and school children kidnapped in Oyo and Borno States weeks ago.
The NUT says the demonstration became necessary to show frustration over the continued targeting of schools and education workers
They proceeded to the Government House where they were received to the Secretary to the State Government, Serumun Aber.
She speaks of efforts being made by the State Government to ensure that abandoned schools are rehabilitated and made safe for the Benue child.

LED BY THE PLATEAU STATE CHAIRMAN OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF TEACHERS, NUT, ELISHA AYIMANI, THE AGGRIEVED TEACHERS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF JOS BEFORE HEADING TO THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE TO PRESENT THEIR DEMANDS.
THE PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT HAS PROMISED A SWIFT RESPONSE TO THE GRIEVANCES RAISED BY THE UNION.
STAKEHOLDERS HAVE REPEATEDLY WARNED THAT UNCHECKED SCHOOL ABDUCTIONS WILL CRIPPLE STUDENT ENROLMENT, LEARNING OUTCOMES, AND THE OVERALL DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA’S EDUCATION SECTOR.
