The prime suspect in the alleged assault of prominent filmmaker and politician, Don Pedro Obaseki, one Osaze Adun, popularly known as Kapuepue has been granted bail by a Benin High Court.

The suspect was arraigned by the Department of State Services, DSS for the December 28th public assualt in which Obaseki was also stripped to his underwear.

The DSS sought leave of the court to hold Adun for 14 days and filed an ex parte motion in this regard.

Defence counsel, Olayiwola Afolabi, a SAN, argued that the alleged offence is bailable and urged the court to exercise its discretion in favour of his client, citing his constitutional rights.

Justice R. A. Ogbevoen granted bail in the sum of five million naira with one surety in like sum.

The surety must be a grade level twelve civil servant residing within the court’s jurisdiction.

The court further directed that the defendant, Adun, to report to the court every last Friday of the month pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Dr. Obaseki was reportedly attacked at the Uwa Primary School football field in Benin.

His counsel Femi Falana, SAN, had earlier disclosed that the DSS headquarters had taken over the investigation, describing the terrorism-related classification of the case as indicative of its seriousness.
