The Ondo State Government has inaugurated girl-child ambassadors to promote girls’ rights, discourage child marriage and raise awareness about sexual exploitation and other harmful practices affecting girls.
The initiative was unveiled in Akure, the state capital, as part of activities marking the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child.
Representing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to girls’ education, welfare and empowerment.
Ajibefun described the annual celebration as an opportunity to recognise the contributions and potential of girls, stressing that education remains a vital tool for preparing them for leadership and helping them realise their aspirations.
A total of 120 girls from secondary schools across Ondo State participated in the programme, which seeks to empower them to become advocates for girls’ rights and help build a society free from discrimination, abuse and harmful traditional practices.
