The Nigerian Government has confirmed that only 17% of the citizens correctly pay their taxes with 83% invading payment.
Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, made this known during his team’s visit to Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria.
The visit by the Committee is to seek collaboration with the Kaduna State Government to fulfill its mandate as Oyedele highlights factors hindering Nigeria’s economic growth to include poverty, high cost of living, low literacy levels, and unemployment.
He explained that the country’s economic growth has been sluggish due to low productivity which made it necessary to harmonise and simplify the tax revenue system to stimulate growth.
Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe who received the team assured the committee of the state’s support. She explained that the State has made progress in reforming its tax system, generating substantial revenue for development.
