A Coalition of opposition lawmakers in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has dismissed the purported extension of the tenure of local government chairmen in Rivers State by the State House of Assembly, few weeks to expiration of their tenure.
Member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who spoke on behalf of the coalition at the National Assembly on Friday said the move was unacceptable to the opposition and all lovers of democracy.

Ugochinyere, who described the action of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a “democratic coup,” said the development, if allowed to stand, is capable of leading to anarchy in the state, appealing to President Bola Tinubu to call his party men in the Rivers Assembly to order.
The opposition lawmakers warned that if the crisis in Rivers State persists, they would initiate moves for the House of Representatives to take over the function of the Rivers State House of Assembly until the issue is resolved.
