Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says that Nigerians both home and abroad share the same desire and burden to see the country working more effectively and becoming truly great by harnessing all of its existing potentials.

Osinbajo, said this during a meeting on Wednesday with a delegation from the US-based Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, ANPA, and a team of Nigerian doctors from the diaspora including those who have relocated to the country to establish private hospitals.

At a meeting which discussed the challenges in the health sector, Osinbajo acknowledged that, physicians in diaspora, especially in the US and Americas, have contributed very considerably to healthcare in Nigeria, in terms of services in rural areas, providing all sorts of care, which has gone on for years.

While addressing some of the concerns of the delegation with respect to healthcare financing, he said “one of the major issues for a population of the size of Nigeria is that it can not depend on budget alone because of lean resources available.

Regarding the Healthcare Sector Reform Committee ,he told the delegation that “a lot of the work the committee is doing border on general access to healthcare and how to make it easier, with the hope that this particular healthcare reform effort would be one that would bring in more order into the sector.

The President of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, ANPA, Dr. Christopher Okunseri, described the organisation as one that has been in existence for over “27 years, registered in the United States of America, representing over 5000 dentists and physicians across the US.

Members of the delegation are top physicians in specialized fields of medicine such as Neurology, Gynecology, Paediatrics, and Orthopaedics.

The meeting was organised by Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM.
