The Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has asked the International Air Transport Association, IATA, to review the three-letter location code, QRW, assigned to Osubi Airport in Delta State.
The Minister says the code does not accurately reflect the Airport’s official name and geographical location, as Osubi Airport is physically located in Osubi town, near Warri.
In a letter to IATA’s Area Manager for West and Central Africa, Samuel Fatokun, Keyamo requested consideration of a new code that more clearly identifies the airport with Osubi as “Osubi is not Warri and Warri is not Osubi.”
While the final decision remains subject to IATA’s coding procedures and availability, among the proposed alternatives are OSU, OSB, SUB and QSB.
The Minister has also directed airlines operating to and from the Airport to reflect Osubi, Delta State, on flight tickets, luggage tags, boarding passes and other passenger documents.
Aviation agencies including the NCAA, FAAN and NAMA have similarly been directed to ensure the proper designation is consistently reflected across their systems, records and publications.
Keyamo said the move is aimed at ensuring geographical accuracy and reducing ambiguity across aviation, travel and ticketing systems.
