Osun: INEC Hosts Stakeholders, Dialogue on Voter apathy

With less than a month to the August 15 Osun State Governorship Election, concerns over voter apathy came to the fore when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through its Electoral Institute, convened a policy dialogue to explore practical strategies for improving voter participation.

Olatunde olajide reports that the policy dialogue focused on practical solutions to reverse voter apathy and boost voter turnout ahead of the Osun State Governorship Election.

This event tagged, ”the 2026 Osun Governorship Election in Perspective,” brought together electoral officials, academia, civil society organisations as well as other critical stakeholders to deliberate on practical strategies to encourage more eligible voters to come out enmassee and participate in the Electoral process to determine the next governor of Osun state.

INEC National Commissioner, South Wlest Professor Kunle Ajayi, represented by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, described voter participation as the foundation of every democratic society,he called on residents of Osun State to reject voter apathy by coming out in large numbers to participate in the August 15 governorship election.

Other speakers however agreed that addressing the issue of Voter apathy requires collective action from all stakeholders adding that increased voter turnout during the governorship election is a strength that will deepen Nigeria’s democratic culture.

The stakeholders agreed that, sustained voter education, peaceful campaigns and public confidence in the electoral process will be a key to overcoming voter apathy in Nigeria Electoral process.
