The Osun State Police Command says three of its officers are currently receiving treatment for gunshot injuries sustained during a clash between rival factions of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state on Monday.
Addressing journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, explained that a team of police officers was responding to the violent outbreak across major motor parks in Osogbo before they were ambushed by a group of thugs.
There was tension across motor parks in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Monday following clashes between rival factions of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) during a protest march.
A faction of the transport union, led by Mr. Kazeem Oyewale, marched through major streets in Osogbo to protest against the leadership of the Osun NURTW Chairman, Nurudeen Alowonle.
The arrival of the protesters heightened tension as members of the rival groups clashed, resulting in gunshot injuries to three police officers.
Parading the suspect on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with the gun attack on three of its operatives.
The Osun State Police Command said it has deployed tactical teams and patrol vans to all flashpoints in Osogbo to restore normalcy and maintain peace across the state capital ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
