Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has condemned the attack on the convoy of Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Calabar, with police confirming the arrest of a suspect in connection with the incident.
The attack occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Market Roundabout as Obi’s convoy returned from the palace of the Obong of Calabar, heading to the Metropolitan Hotel for the party’s presidential town hall meeting.
Governor Otu described the incident as barbaric and alien to the values of peace and hospitality associated with Cross River State.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, the governor says he has directed security agencies to ensure that everyone involved is apprehended and brought to justice.
The suspected hoodlums, armed with machetes and sticks, emerged from the Calabar Road and Clerks Alley axis, attacking vehicles in the convoy and smashing their windshields.
Police say their intervention, which included the deployment of tear gas, led to the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect, Victor Edet, while other suspected attackers fled.
The Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has ordered a thorough investigation to identify other persons involved and establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
Meanwhile, normalcy has been restored in the affected area.
