The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered a firearm following an attack on motorists along the Oyo–Iwo Expressway.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 5, 2026, around Akoda Village in Afijio Local Government Area.
According to the police, the gang barricaded the road and attacked travelers returning from a market towards Iwo, dispossessing them of valuables. Some victims sustained machete injuries during the attack.
In response to a distress call received at the Police Control Room, Eleyele, operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, (VCRU) were deployed by the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga. The team secured the scene, rescued victims, and recovered one single-barrel gun and two clubs believed to have been used by the gang.
A follow-up intelligence operation led to the arrest of Abubakar Jape and Sheu Dengi. The suspects confessed during interrogation and were identified by victims during an identification parade. A rechargeable torchlight belonging to one of the victims was also recovered from their hideout.
The Commissioner commended the VCRU operatives for their prompt response and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to arrest fleeing members of the gang.
