In South-West Nigeria, the Oyo State Police Command in partnership with the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC has launched a Safe School initiative to strengthen security in schools as the new academic session begins.

The programme is to focus on increased police visibility around schools, protection of pupils, teachers and school property, and improved intelligence gathering to respond quickly to threats.

The launch coincided with the 42nd anniversary of the PCRC in Oyo State and had in attendance the National Chairman of PCRC, the Oyo State Chairperson and other stakeholders.

In a release signed by the Oyo State PPRO, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka stated that the Command sees school safety as a collective responsibility and is working with school owners, PTAs, teachers, parents and students to identify and prevent threats early.

Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around schools to the police.

Oyo State was recently in the news over the kidnapping and safe rescue of pupils and their teachers taken from their schools by gunmen in Oriire LGA.
