The Forum of PDP Chairmanship and Councillorship Candidates in Plateau State has given the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, PLASIEC, nine days to conduct the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The candidates are warning that failure to hold the polls before the expiration of the tenure of the current elected councils on October 10 could create a vacuum in the democratic structures of the 17 Local Government Areas.
The PDP candidates are raising concerns over the delay by PLASIEC to announce a fresh date for the Plateau State Local Government Elections.
The commission had initially scheduled the polls for September 9, 2026, but the election did not hold and no new date has been announced.
Addressing journalists in Jos, leader of the forum, Sylvanus Dashe Datong, said the candidates participated in their party primaries and submitted their details to PLASIEC in preparation for the elections.
The forum bases its demand on provisions of the PLASIEC Law, which it says provide for the timing of local government elections and the expiration of the tenure of elected councils.
The candidates say the current councils were inaugurated on October 10, 2024, and are therefore expected to complete their two-year tenure on October 10, 2026.
They argue that failure to conduct elections before then could create a vacuum in the 17 local government areas.
The candidates also referred to the Plateau State High Court judgment delivered in March, noting that the matter is currently subject to appeal.
They are calling on PLASIEC to release a fresh election timetable and conduct the polls before October 10, while urging the Plateau State Government to provide the commission with necessary lawful support.
