Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has joined calls from concerned Nigerians seeking clarification on the whereabouts of President Bola Tinubu, amid reports that the President’s extended absence from the country is affecting national affairs.
Obi, through the spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Reach, Idris Zekeri, expressed concern over President Tinubu’s continued absence, particularly as Nigeria faces pressing domestic and international issues.
President Tinubu had commenced a three-week working vacation in Europe on August 30, 2026, as part of his annual leave, according to an earlier statement from the State House.
The President’s expected return on September 21 was shifted by a few days till this weekend. He has however not returned, as at the time of this report.
In a statement on Sunday, Obi referenced Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama’s address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, UNGA in New York, describing the presentation as remarkable.
Obi questioned why Nigeria’s President was not present at the global gathering, noting that Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has been represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
He asked: “Where is Nigeria’s President?”
According to Obi, the President’s absence from the international stage raises questions, particularly at a time when the country is confronted with significant challenges both at home and abroad.
He further noted that Tinubu had not attended the UNGA for three consecutive years, while stressing the importance of presidential representation at major international engagements.
Obi, however, called on Nigerians to continue praying for the President’s safe return, so that he can resume his responsibilities and begin addressing the numerous challenges confronting the country.
