The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has called on politicians to stop politicising issues of national importance, particularly those affecting the lives and welfare of Nigerians.
Obi made the appeal in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, where he visited persons displaced by recent attacks in the area.
Peter Obi arrived in Plateau State from Makurdi, Benue State, where he had earlier attempted to visit victims of similar recent attacks, but his convoy was blocked and denied movement to the locations by suspected political thugs
Obi confirmed to journalists that he was stopped from proceeding to the affected communities in Benue State, prompting him to continue his journey to Plateau State, where he visited displaced persons in Mangu.
Describing the situation as unfortunate, the 2027 elections NDC presidential candidate urged politicians to desist from politicising issues of national importance and instead focus on finding solutions to the challenges confronting Nigerians.
Obi said he was in Plateau State to identify with victims of attacks, some of whom are currently taking refuge at an internally displaced persons camp.
He called on other political leaders to visit communities affected by insecurity, saying such visits would give them a better understanding of the ordeal of displaced Nigerians.
Representatives of the displaced persons expressed appreciation for the visit and appealed to government at all levels to urgently intervene and provide the necessary support to alleviate their suffering.
Peter Obi also made donations to the displaced persons.
He clarified that his visit was not politically motivated, but was intended to demonstrate solidarity, promote unity and identify with the downtrodden in society.
