The Porb Justice and Development Initiative (PJDI) has called for an urgent investigation into the reported oil and gas spill from Well 14 in Uzere Community, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The organisation says it has formally notified the relevant regulatory agencies and the operator, urging a prompt assessment of the incident to establish the facts and determine the extent of any environmental impact.
According to the group, priority should be given to containing any ongoing discharge, carrying out an independent investigation, and undertaking remediation where environmental damage is established, in line with existing laws and regulatory standards.
They however, stressed that their intervention should not be interpreted as an attempt to apportion blame, maintaining that responsibility should only be determined after a transparent investigation by the appropriate authorities.
The organisation also emphasized the need for collaboration among the host community, regulatory agencies, the operator, and government to ensure a credible response to the incident and address legitimate concerns raised by residents.
It added that it would continue to monitor developments, engage relevant stakeholders, and advocate for environmental accountability, while supporting measures aimed at protecting affected communities and preventing similar incidents in the future.
