Plateau killings: Authorities relax curfew in Jos North LGA

PLATEAU

Plateau State Government has announced the relaxation of the 48-hour curfew earlier imposed on Jos North Local Government Area, following the relative calm recorded after the recent violent attack in Angwan Rukuba.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the decision was approved by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

According to the statement, the adjusted curfew will take effect from April 1, 2026, and will now be enforced from 3pm to 7am., allowing residents to go about their lawful activities between 7am and 3pm.

The government has urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, as security agencies continue to monitor the situation to ensure sustained peace and order.

It also commended citizens for their cooperation and resilience during the period, while reiterating its commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state.

Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, has dismissed as false and misleading a viral comment by a youth leader in Angwan Rukuba community, alleging that troops provided cover for perpetrators of the Palm Sunday attack.

In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Task Force, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, the military described the allegation as unfounded and capable of inciting public distrust.

The statement explained that troops did not, at any point, provide support or cover for the attackers. Instead, it noted that upon receiving a distress call, security personnel swiftly mobilised to the scene, although the attackers had already fled.

According to the Task Force, troops acted professionally to prevent further escalation of violence and immediately pursued the fleeing suspects. This, it said, has been corroborated by survivors and eyewitnesses.

The military further revealed that four gun trucks were deployed to the area and that their response has been verified by other security agencies on ground.

It added that a prompt investigation into the allegation confirmed it to be false.

The Joint Task Force warned that such claims could demoralise troops and create unnecessary tension between the military and host communities.

Residents have been urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and to support security agencies with credible information to aid ongoing efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
