The Plateau State Police Command has launched a Violent Crimes Response Unit, VCRU, aimed at strengthening security operations and promoting human rights-based policing across the state.

Speaking during the inauguration in Jos, Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah said the unit was created on the directive of the Inspector General of Police to respond swiftly to violent crimes and emerging security threats while ensuring accountability and respect for the rule of law.

The Police Commissioner noted that officers deployed to the unit were carefully selected based on professionalism, integrity, and operational experience in handling sensitive assignments. He added that the operatives have been trained to tackle violent crimes effectively while remaining accountable to the public.

CP Ewah also announced the establishment of a civilian oversight mechanism to monitor the activities of the unit and address complaints from members of the public where necessary. He warned that officers of the unit remain subject to the provisions of the Police Act and other extant laws, stressing that any form of misconduct would attract disciplinary action.

During the briefing, the Police Command paraded six suspects arrested for alleged cattle rustling, theft, drug-related offences, and unlawful possession of firearms.

Items recovered from the suspects include three locally fabricated rifles, two revolver guns fitted to use AK-47 magazines, one pump-action gun, and four rounds of 7.62 millimetre live ammunition.

The Police say investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police assured residents that the new unit would work closely with communities, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to improve public safety and combat violent crimes in the state. He also called on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible information to aid crime prevention and effective law enforcement.
