Plateau State Government is set to outlaw polythene bags and single-use plastics across the state.

The move is to tackle worsening environmental pollution and mitigate the harsh impacts of climate change.

Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, Peter Gwom, dropped the hint in Jos at an event marking the 2026 World Environment Day.

Plateau State has seen a sharp rise in devastating flash floods in recent times.

Experts blame the frequency and intensity of these floods on blocked drainage channels, caused mostly by the reckless dumping of plastic waste.

To halt the drift, the government says the legal machinery is now in motion for a total statewide ban on single-use plastics.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Climate, Securing Our Future,” places a heavy focus on drafting young people into environmental advocacy.

Aligning with the goal, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, notes that the North-Central region is facing a mix of environmental threats.

The agency says fixing the crisis requires a united front from the government, public institutions, and everyday citizens.

Participating students were handed tree seedlings to plant and nurture, a move organisers hope will sprout a lifetime of climate action.
