Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested a 25-year-old man, Muhammed Ibrahim, in Niger State over the alleged beheading of a commercial motorcyclist, Shehu Mohammed, and the theft of his motorcycle.
The suspect, also known as Manga, was arrested on October 1 at about 2 p.m. by operatives attached to Maikunkele Division in collaboration with personnel of the Violent Crime Response Unit.
Niger State Police Command spokesman, Superintendent Wasi’u Abiodun, confirmed the arrest in a statement.
He said the suspect allegedly hired 23-year-old Mohammed, a commercial motorcyclist from Pai village in Bosso Local Government Area, on September 30 to take him from Beji to Garatu village to visit some friends.
According to Abiodun, investigations revealed that while returning from Garatu at about midnight, the suspect allegedly conspired with two accomplices to attack the motorcyclist along the Gidan-Kwano/Maikunkele Road.
One of the alleged accomplices was identified as Risku, while the other was unnamed. Both remain at large.
Police said the assailants beheaded the motorcyclist and took his new motorcycle.
The stolen motorcycle and a cutlass were subsequently recovered from Ibrahim, according to the police.
The suspect remains in custody at the Violent Crime Response Unit as investigations continue and police search for the other suspects.
Abiodun said the suspects would be charged in court upon completion of the investigation.
