Police confirm violent clash with motorcycle operators in Abuja

The police have confirmed a violent clash between its operatives and commercial motorcycle operators at Durumi District of Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The clash follows enforcement of the ban on motorcycles in the Federal Capital City after several meetings with the various heads of motorcycle units across the Territory.

The FCT Command of the Nigerian Police Force had on Tuesday activated an enforcement exercise at the various Divisional and Area Commands to ensure proper compliance with the directives.

During the operation, over 20 motorcycle operators were arrested by police on an enforcement round for violators of the ban.

The crisis started when the motorcycles were taken to the Divisional Police Station and subsequently handed over to the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, popularly known as VIO for screening.

Upon sighting the VIO operatives at the Divisional Police Station, the motorcyclists in their numbers decided to obstruct them from moving out of the station and started attacking the officers.

The police who swung into action, dispersing the violent motorcyclists who took to the streets to express their displeasure were attacked.

Though no life was lost nor properties damaged many persons sustained various degrees of injuries during the violent clash.
