Police have made a significant breakthrough in crime following in the rescue of the Chief Medical Director of Crown Hospital, Nkpor, Edwin Emegokafor, alongside three others, days after they were kidnapped in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria.
At a media briefing in Awka, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said there was a fierce gun battle between police operatives and the armed criminals at their den in Obosi, Idemili North LGA, two of the armed suspects were neutralised and a police officer fatally injured.
A week ago, news filtered about the kidnap of the CMD of a privately owned Crown Hospital in Nkpor. His successful rescue alongside three others has been hailed as a major breakthrough for the Anambra Police Command.
Orutugu led journalists to the fast developing hilly estate in Nkpor, a secluded area sharing boundary with Obosi, in Idemili North LGA where the kidnappers operate and a child trafficking business is allegedly carried out.
The Police breakthrough led the Anambra Government to invoke its homeland security law which provides for the demolition of any building used in the criminal activity.
In another significant breakthrough, the command says one suspect, Chinazo Anyasirikwu, a female, was arrested for alleged child trafficking, leading to the rescue of 12 children, aged one to 20 years.
The Police also disclosed the arrest of other criminal elements and recovery of their hardware including vehicles, maintaining its commitment to sustain operations against all forms of criminality and ensuring safety and security of Anambra State.
