High explosive devices recovered near Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre in Akwa-Ibom State

Police have averted what could have been a major tragedy at the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre in Ikot Ekpene, in Akwa-Ibom State, South-South Nigeria after recovering high explosive devices around the facility.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, made this known in a statement in Uyo, the state capital.

According to the statement, the discovery was made following credible intelligence from Correctional authorities about suspicious objects found near the custodial centre.

Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, immediately deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD Unit and other tactical teams to secure the area.

A coordinated search led to the recovery of two 90-millimetre high explosive rounds, burning fuse materials, iron chisels, a conduit pipe, screwdriver and other tools.

The EOD team successfully rendered the explosives safe, preventing possible loss of lives and damage to infrastructure.

Security has now been reinforced around the facility, while investigations continue to uncover those behind the plot.

The Police Commissioner assured residents that the situation is under control, with no casualty recorded, and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
