The Oyo State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the killing of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, who was allegedly attacked by a masquerade and its followers in the Labiran area of Ibadan.
According to the Command, the incident was reported at Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday, July 5, 2026 by one Mrs. Aderemi.
She said she received a distress call from her elder sister that the Asoleke masquerade and its followers, while parading through Labiran, attacked her younger brother with axes and cutlasses around 4:00 p.m., causing severe injuries.
Police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mapo Division, responded immediately. The victim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival by doctors. The scene was processed and photographs were taken. At the family’s request, the corpse was released for burial in line with Islamic rites.
The masquerade identified as Asoleke has been arrested. Four other suspected followers remain at large.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbemiga has ordered the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The Command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to aid the investigation.
It also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
