Police say they have to engage the services of a pathologist to conduct a post-mortem examination on the body of late Mary Habila, a physiotherapist whose death has stirred controversy.
Police authorities in a statement in Abakaliki,the Ebonyi State capital late Wednesday said the post-mortem result will assist investigators unravel the cause of her death.
Mary Habila, reportedly died at the Uburu private residence of Nigeria’s serving Minister of Works, David Umahi on June 27.
The Police statement explained that Habila was confirmed dead by doctors at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital in Uhuru, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the State, after a medical emergency brought her to the facility from the Minister’s residence.
Ebonyi Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said preliminary findings indicate that the deceased and a colleague formed part of the medical team attached to the Minister of Works, and had accompanied him to his hometown in Uburu, where she died in a room within his compound.
The Commissioner of Police is said to have directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID for thorough investigation, after being debriefed by the DPO in charge of Ohaozara LGA.
The Police statement notes that the Command has commenced comprehensive investigation including engaging the services of a pathologist to conduct post-mortem examination, though the family of the deceased, claimed they do not want any autopsy performed on their daughter.
According to the police spokesperson, the Command considers the examination necessary given the sensitive nature of the case and the importance of establishing the true cause of Mary Habila’s death.
