The Niger State Police Command says it has rescued two children aged 8 and 12 who were found stranded in their father’s abandoned Toyota Highlander along the Abuja-Kaduna highway after the vehicle went missing in Suleja.
The Police Spokesman, Superintendent Wasi’u Abiodun, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on October 19 when the father took the children to a government school in Suleja to seek admission but was denied entry because they had incomplete documents.
According to the police, the father parked by the roadside after leaving the school gate and handed the children the vehicle key before going to a nearby computer centre to photocopy some documents.
The father reportedly returned to discover that the children and the vehicle, with registration number ABJ 810 GZ, were missing.
Following a report at the Maje Divisional Police Headquarters, the Divisional Police Officer mobilised officers to the scene, interviewed the school’s security personnel and launched intensive search patrols.
The search led to the discovery of the vehicle abandoned along the Abuja-Kaduna highway, with the two children inside, as they were rescued unharmed, while the vehicle was recovered and searched by the police.
When questioned, the children reportedly told investigators that they had fallen asleep while waiting for their father to return.
The police said further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
