The Presidency has threatened to release tapes of meetings between the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore and individuals led by late Ismaila Isa Funtua, who tried to broker his release from detention.
This followed remarks made by Sowore against the late close associate of President Muhammadu Buhari after his death on Monday, on the failed mission to reconcile him with government.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President On Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu said the meeting ended well contrary to what Sowore had claimed.
He also revealed that members of the team that met Sowore did so because they saw him as a publisher despite falling foul of the law because of politics.
The presidential aide disclosed that late Funtua, Vanguard Newspapers publisher, Sam Amuka and ThisDay Publisher and President, Nigerian Press Organisation, Nduka Obaigbena, all agreed that Sowore was a “rascal”, who had used his newspaper “to abuse everyone, yet agreed to bail him out.

Shehu said “Knowing the way the secret service works, it should surprise no one if they keep a recording of that meeting.
He added that the presidency might be forced to ask for the release of tapes, in case they are available for the public to judge, going by the unfair attacks on the dead by Sowore.
