President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases ranging from 30 to 80% for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
About 250,000 officers and personnel are expected to benefit from the new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30% salary increase.
The statement adds that personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will get a 50% increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy an 80% increase.
The new pay package will raise the annual salary bill for armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion.
President Tinubu says the approval is part of efforts to support and appreciate the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel as they confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats
across the country.
The President stressed that no nation can achieve greatness without security, adding that his administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces through the provision of weapons and technological tools needed to effectively carry out their duties.
President Tinubu urged servicemen and women to see the salary adjustment as a sign of government’s appreciation for their service to the nation, expressing confidence that Nigeria will overcome the challenges posed by those threatening the peace and security of the country.
