President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that children currently held captive across parts of the country have not been forgotten, declaring that his administration will intensify efforts to secure their safe return.
In a statement marking the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, President Tinubu expressed concern over the plight of abducted children and teachers in Oyo and Borno states, noting that the celebration remains incomplete while many families continue to wait and pray for the return of their loved ones.
The President said some Nigerian children who should be celebrating with their families are instead being held by criminal groups, stressing that government will not relent until those abducted from schools, homes and communities are rescued and those responsible brought to justice.
President Tinubu stated that he has directed all relevant security agencies to sustain and intensify coordinated rescue operations nationwide, with emphasis on intelligence-led missions aimed at securing the safe recovery of abducted children and other vulnerable citizens.
The President also announced plans to strengthen school protection measures in high-risk areas through improved school vulnerability mapping, closer coordination between state governments and security agencies, rapid response mechanisms, and stronger community-based early warning systems.
According to him, the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with state governments, has further been directed to deepen implementation of the Safe Schools framework to ensure that schools in vulnerable communities have clear emergency response procedures and effective communication channels.
President Tinubu further assured that children rescued from abduction, violence and displacement would receive comprehensive reintegration support, including medical care, counselling, education and social services.
While calling on parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community groups and the media to support efforts aimed at protecting children, the President said safeguarding Nigerian children must become a collective national responsibility.
On the occasion of Children’s Day, President Tinubu celebrated Nigerian children for their resilience, creativity and determination, describing them as the pride of the nation and custodians of Nigeria’s future.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving education, healthcare, nutrition, social protection and safer communities to ensure every Nigerian child can grow, learn and pursue their dreams without fear.
