President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has commended Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, for making history.

President Tinubu gave the commendation on Saturday, October 18, 2026, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when Ambassador Ibrahim formally presented the proposed 2027 United Nations Appropriations Bill of US$14 billion to him.

The presentation is historic, being the first time in 66 years of Nigeria’s membership of the United Nations that a Nigerian would chair the UN Budgetary and Administrative Committee, and present the UN budget to a Nigerian President.

Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, who is the Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly 5th Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters, presented the seven-volume budget document to President Tinubu, after it was submitted by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to the Committee.

Speaking after the presentation, Ambassador Ibrahim said it was a moment of national pride.

According to him, “This is the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will chair the Budget and Administrative Committee. It is the first time, and we do not know when it will happen again in history. So President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making history by being able to receive this budget. He is the first Nigerian President in 66 years to receive the UN budget from the United Nations.”

Giving a breakdown, Ambassador Ibrahim disclosed that the proposed regular budget stands at about US$3.4 billion, while the peacekeeping budget is about US$8.5 billion, with a combined figure of about US$14 billion, approximately ₦36 to ₦40 trillion.

He explained that the document remains a proposal that will still undergo detailed negotiations and approval by member States before implementation.

Ambassador Ibrahim also assured that the United Nations will make positive impacts in Nigeria, stressing that under Nigeria’s chairmanship, every dollar will be accounted for and the UN must impact member States and not just the Secretariat.
