In observance of the World Press Freedom Day 2024, the government of Cross River State has once again underscored its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of journalists actively engaged in their profession within the region.

This affirmation was conveyed during a gathering of the press, presided over by the State Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang.

Addressing the assembly, the state Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, stressed the importance of upholding the principles of objectivity and balance in journalistic endeavours.

In respect of this year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” Ekpang articulated the government’s proactive stance in incentivizing and supporting journalists dedicated to covering environmental issues.

In his address regarding the theme for the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, Nsa Gill, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Otu, underscored the groundwell of environmental crisis narratives available in the state.

He urged journalists to harness the information as a means of educating and engaging citizens on viable pathways towards environmental sustainability.

The forum provided a platform for open dialogue between government officials and journalists, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration in advancing press freedom and responsible journalism.

This strategic initiative underscores government’s recognition of the pivotal role the media plays in raising awareness and fostering informed discourse on critical environmental challenges.
