Figures from the Building Collapse Prevention Guild show Lagos accounts for more than 346 of the 604 building collapse cases recorded in Nigeria since 1974.
Concerned by the recurring tragedies, professionals are calling for stronger collaboration and strict compliance with building regulations to make Lagos safer.
They spoke at a forum with the theme “Building a resilient Lagos through synergy.
From the 21-storey Ikoyi building collapse in November 2021 that claimed over 40 lives, to the June 2026 incident that killed eight people, including a baby, the cost of structural failure has been devastating.
At this forum in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, members of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild said preventing future disasters requires government agencies, developers, engineers, architects, and communities to work together rather than in isolation.

Participants also raised concerns about flooding in Amuwo Odofin, warning that poor drainage and unchecked development increase the risk of building failure during the rainy season.
They say building resilience means enforcing standards before construction begins, not responding after lives have been lost.
With the theme ” Building a Resilient Lagos Through Synergy”, the annual event birthed two years ago is designed to promote greater Collaboration among stakeholders in the Community to attain environmental sustainability goals.
