Air Peace has suffered an operational setback after one of its Airbus A320 aircraft was damaged in a ramp vehicle accident at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 1 (MMA1), Lagos.
The incident, which occurred after Flight P47427 arrived from Kano and passengers had disembarked has forced the airline to withdraw the aircraft from service, with potential implications for its flight schedule.
According to the airline, the accident happened while a baggage conveyor belt operated by the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCo) was being positioned for baggage offloading.
The operator reportedly suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the equipment, which continued moving unattended before colliding with one of the aircraft’s engines.
The worker was taken to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) clinic for treatment, while the aircraft sustained substantial engine damage.
The incident highlights the operational risks associated with ground handling activities, where even isolated occurrences can have significant safety and financial consequences.
Aircraft engine damage typically requires detailed technical inspections, repairs and regulatory certification before returning to service, potentially disrupting airline operations and reducing fleet availability during the repair period.
In a statement, Air Peace apologised to passengers who may experience delays or schedule adjustments, saying alternative arrangements are being made to minimise disruptions.
The Airline added that it is cooperating with NAHCo and relevant aviation authorities to determine the cause of the accident and identify measures to strengthen airside safety and prevent similar incidents.
