The destruction of two monuments, erected at a busy location in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, to inspire reading culture amongst the younger generation has elicited angry reactions from some residents.
Condemning the act, some residents are of the opinion that the development stemmed from the current high level of disdain for education among many youths, who are shifting towards materialism being promoted in the entertainment industry.

Before now, the cement sculptures of the studying female and male pupils on the busy Etegwe-Edepie roundabout in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital was a regular sight to both residents and visitors alike.
However recently, many residents going through that axis have come to the shocking discovery of the destruction by of both statutes erected to inspire deep love for education by unknown persons.
While calling for stiff sanctions against anyone caught destroying public property, the respondents called for more investment in the education sector to reorientate the minds of the youths.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Bayelsa education authority on the matter was unsuccessful.
