Nigerian Red Cross Society has extended humanitarian assistance to residents of eight flood-affected communities in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria following the devastation caused by rising water levels around the River Niger.

The intervention, supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is aimed at supporting vulnerable households whose homes and livelihoods have been affected by the flooding.

For residents of the communities, flooding has become a recurring challenge, threatening homes, livelihoods and the security of families every rainy season.

Heavy rainfall and rising water levels around the River Niger have left several households counting their losses, with many struggling to cope with the disruption to their daily lives.

The intervention by the Red Cross is designed to provide immediate assistance to vulnerable families and reduce the burden of meeting basic needs in the aftermath of the disaster.

Kogi State Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Abubakar Abdullahi, says the beneficiaries were identified through a process of flood assessment and verification to ensure assistance reaches households most affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency is urging residents in vulnerable riverine communities to take early precautionary measures and relocate to safer locations whenever there are signs of impending flooding.

For the affected communities, the relief intervention offers some immediate respite, but the underlying threat remains.

As flooding continues to expose the vulnerability of settlements along the River Niger, residents will require more than emergency supplies.

Sustainable flood management, early warning systems, safe relocation arrangements and long-term support for affected livelihoods remain critical to reducing the impact of future disasters.
