The Federal Government has commenced construction of the 700-kilometre highway linking Akwanga, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe and Borno States, the fourth Legacy Road Project targeted at improving Nigeria’s road infrastructure and regional economic integration.
During the groundbreaking ceremony of the over ₦100 billion road project, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed his resolve to deliver durable road infrastructure that will stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the over ₦100 billion, 700-kilometre Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Maiduguri section of the project was held in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s road network and expanding economic opportunities through strategic infrastructure investment.
In his message to the ceremony, delivered through the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said sustained investment along the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe corridor and other critical highways will improve transportation, facilitate trade, reduce travel time, and strengthen regional connectivity between the North-Central and North-East.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the Legacy Road Projects as interconnected corridors designed to unite communities, enhance mobility, and unlock economic potential across the region.
Abdullahi Sule, Governor of Nasarawa State, praised the Federal Government for initiating the project, noting that ongoing investments in dualised highways and bridges have continued to position the state as a growing hub for commerce and development.
Governors of the benefiting states, Nasarawa State, Plateau State, Bauchi State and Gombe State—pledged their continued support for the Tinubu administration while expressing optimism that the highway, when completed, will ease the movement of people and goods, deepen regional integration, and accelerate socio-economic development along the corridor.
