The Justice, Development and Peace Makers Centre has classified Osun as the most politically violent State among the eight States participating in off-cycle elections in Nigeria.
The organisation stated this during their high level political stakeholders dialogue on election security assessment ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
With about thirty days to the Governorship election, no fewer than five deaths have officially been documented by the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre between May and June 2026, through a platform launched by the organisation to monitor election activities.
The Peace makers called on political parties to discourage violence among their supporters, while appealing to traditional rulers, community leaders, parents and faith-based organisations to work together in promoting peace before, during and after the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the religious leaders commended the organisation for the analysis, pledging to ensure all efforts are deployed to restore the State’s reputation as a peaceful area.
As all eyes are on pre-election activities, stakeholders are calling on relevant institutions to strengthen security coordination in the interest of the people and ensure credible, free and violence-free governorship election.
