The need for the Nigerian media to take full ownership of the electoral process and provide accurate, balanced and factual reporting on government development programmes, as part of efforts to ensure free, fair and credible 2027 general elections, has been emphasised.
Former Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and FCT Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Abdullahi Candido, who made the call at a one-day media retreat in Gwagwalada, Abuja, said the media plays a critical role in shaping public perception and influencing voters’ decisions, stressing that responsible journalism is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
As political activities gather momentum ahead of the election season, political parties and various interest groups are intensifying efforts to win public support.
One of the key strategies is engaging the media to effectively communicate their messages and shape public opinion.

Director of the Media Directorate of the FCT Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Mohammed Babangwoshi, alongside other participants, described the retreat as an eye-opener, saying it had enhanced their understanding of the media’s critical role in promoting credible, balanced and responsible election reporting.
The media retreat attracted participants from the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory, bringing together media professionals and other stakeholders to strengthen their understanding of the media’s role in the electoral process.
