A civil rights organization, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, otherwise known as InterSociety, has raised alarm over worsening human rights abuses and insecurity in Southeastern Nigeria.

The group, in two chilling reports, paints a grim picture of what it describes as a “war-zone situation” in the region.

At a press conference in Enugu, the state capital, InterSociety presented its findings, accusing both state and non-state actors of contributing to the security crisis in the region.

One of the reports, titled “Ocean of Innocent Blood Flowing in the East,” alleges that since 2015, thousands of civilians have suffered violent crimes, including extra judicial killings, abductions, and destruction of property.

The rights group points accusing fingers at security forces for alleged human rights violations, and non-state actors, some of whom it alleges receive covert support from influential figures within and outside the region.

Intersociety is therefore calling for urgent accountability from security agencies, and urging the government to uphold international standards of human rights and justice.
