The Rivers State Government has stepped in with relief materials and support for residents of Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Area affected by flood.

The state government also announced free health insurance coverage for vulnerable residents affected by the disaster.

Deputy Governor of Rivers State and Chairman of the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Professor Ngozi Odu, who led the distribution, said the Fubara administration remains committed to protecting the lives and welfare of residents across the state, regardless of their status or where they live.

The intervention is being coordinated by the State Flood Relief Committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu.

Professor Odu noted that the Fubara administration remains committed to protecting the lives and welfare of residents across the state, regardless of their status or where they live.

For residents already counting the cost of the floods, the government intervention provides much-needed relief.

But the flooding also raises a larger question about the responsibility shared by the government and the communities they serve.

Heavy rainfall may be unavoidable.

But blocked drainage channels, indiscriminate waste disposal, and structures erected on waterways can compound its effects.

And so, as the Rivers State Government continues its intervention, residents are being reminded that keeping communities safe from flooding is not only a government responsibility.

Relief materials delivered to the local government areas include: mattresses, pillows, blankets, towels, bathing soap, and cutlery.

Other items include rice, beans, garri, palm and vegetable oil, noodles, and seasoning.

For Obio-Akpor and Port Harcourt communities, the immediate priority is recovery.

But the bigger challenge remains how to ensure that when the next heavy rains come, the waters find their way through and not into people’s homes.
