The leadership crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party has persisted for nearly two years, as conflicting court judgments continue to shape the party’s direction.
The dispute between Shehu Gabam and Sadiq Abubakar Gombe has produced multiple legal pronouncements.
Against this backdrop, a coalition of civil society organisations has expressed concern over the delay, describing it as an issue that goes beyond internal party affairs to the broader question of respect for the rule of law and democratic governance.

On May 22, a court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise Abubakar Gombe, a directive the commission complied with.
However, a subsequent judgment on June 9 compelled INEC to recognise Gabam as the party’s National Chairman.
Despite the latest ruling, INEC is yet to reflect Gabam’s name on its official portal, weeks after the judgment.
