The Senate has approved the 2025 and 2026 budget proposals for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), with a combined expenditure of N404 billion, aimed at strengthening policing, improving infrastructure and enhancing personnel welfare.
The Red Chamber approved N170.1 billion for the 2025 fiscal year, including N8.5 billion for overhead costs, and N233.9 billion for the 2026 fiscal year.
The approvals came after the Senate considered and adopted two reports of its Committee on Police Affairs, presented by Senator Yunus Akintunde on behalf of the Committee Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam-Madori.
Presenting the reports, Akintunde explained that the 2025 budget had earlier been approved as the Fund’s 2024 budget but was not implemented due to the proposed amendment of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2019, which sought to extend the tenure of the Fund, as well as other circumstances beyond its control.
He said the unimplemented budget was therefore re-presented to the Senate as the 2025 budget proposal for fresh legislative approval.
According to the Committee, the 2025 budget is designed to strengthen the operational efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force, improve Police infrastructure, enhance personnel welfare and address emerging security challenges across the country.
Lawmakers noted that the timely implementation of the approved budgets would significantly improve policing and internal security.
Following consideration of the Committee’s recommendations, the Senate approved the N170.1 billion 2025 budget and the N233.9 billion 2026 budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
