Nigeria’s Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, says effective and proactive legislation requires the active participation of stakeholders, including members of the public and not legislators alone.

He made this known while delivering a lecture to participants of Executive Course 48 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, Plateau State.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who was at the institute as a guest lecturer, stressed the need for effective collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government, noting that respect for constitutional boundaries and institutional responsibilities would enhance governance and national development.

He said lawmaking should be informed by broad consultations and contributions from relevant stakeholders to ensure that policies and legislation address the needs and aspirations of the people.

The Senate Leader also challenged participants of Executive Course 48 to actively contribute to national discourse and policy decisions, rather than remain passive observers in matters affecting the country’s future.

He noted that, as members of an intellectual and strategic leadership community, they have a responsibility to bring their knowledge and expertise to bear on national development.

The Director-General of NIPSS, Professor Tayo Omotaya, called for a stronger institutional relationship between the National Assembly and the institute.

He said such collaboration would provide opportunities for research findings and policy recommendations generated by NIPSS to serve as valuable inputs in legislative processes and national policymaking.

The lecture also featured an interactive session during which participants of Executive Course 48 engaged the Senate Leader on various issues concerning the Nigerian Senate and the country’s legislative process.

The engagement provided an opportunity for participants to seek clarification on parliamentary procedures, legislative responsibilities, and the role of the Senate in strengthening democratic governance.
