The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday unanimously rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in charge of the South-South.
Reading the recommendation of the Committee of the Upper Legislative Chamber during plenary, Committee Chairman, Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano South), said the panel rejected Onochie’s nomination because it violated the federal character principle.
The report indicates that Onochie was to replace May Agbamuche-Mbu who represents the region on the INEC board.
Senator Gaya disclosed that though Mbu is billed to retire in December, it was contrary to Section 14 (1.3)of the 1999 Constitution as amended, to have two persons from the same state representing a region,Lauretta Onochie and Agbamuche Mbu are both from Delta North.
