Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has formally resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress, ADC and defected to the Labour Party, LP.

Abaribe’s defection is conveyed in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by the President of the Senate.

However, the lawmaker did not state the reason for his move to the LP.

The development recalls his previous defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA to the ADC, which was met with resistance from some lawmakers.

At the time, the Senate maintained that the Constitution is clear that any lawmaker who defects from the party that sponsored them to the National Assembly risks losing their seat, except in cases where there is a verifiable division within the party.

Meanwhile, the senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has announced his resignation from the ADC and his defection to the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC.

Umeh said the decision became necessary, citing lingering divisions within the party’s leadership and unending litigations in the ADC.

In a letter read on the floor of the Senate, the lawmaker explained that the move follows wide consultations with his family, conscience, and supporters.

Senator Umeh noted that it is time to move on, acknowledging that he may not have done enough to promote the NDC in the past, but is now fully committed to contributing meaningfully through the new platform.

He reaffirmed his dedication to national development, pledging to continue serving with integrity and purpose under the NDC.
