Soldiers allegedly torture teacher to death in Plateau State

Residents of Tina Junction, a suburb of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State are calling for justice over the alleged torture of one Benjamin Izang by some soldiers serving under Special Task Force Operation Save Haven following dispute with a lady which led to his death.

Neighbours of the deceased teacher are calling on the State Government and authorities of the Nigerian Army to quickly investigate the incident to calm nerves and absolve the country of human rights abuses.

It was a sad day for the community as the residents mourn the death of their neighbour, Benjamin Izang, a trained teacher who had reportedly quarrelled with a local egg vendor whose boyfriend was said to be one of the peacekeeping troops stationed at Tina Junction.

According to members of the community, the quarrel reportedly started when he cracked a N50 egg before paying.

Mother of the deceased and 60year-old widow, gave her own account of what happened as she cries for justice for her son.

The body of late Benjamin has since been deposited at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and the where about of the lady involved is yet to be unknown since the incident, while members of the community demand for justice.

Spokesperson of the STF has confirmed the incident saying the matter is being investigated.

Meanwhile, AIT learnt that the STF Commander, Major-General Akobundu paid a condolence visit to the Izang family.

When contacted, the Plateau State Police Command also said it is aware of the development and that investigation is already ongoing as the community hopes that justice will prevail.
